Google founder unveils all-electric flying car

Where we're going, we don't need roads—or so Larry Page hopes.

Silicon Valley-based startup Kitty Hawk on Monday unveiled the first public demonstration of the company's all-electric flying car.

Dubbed the Kitty Hawk Flyer, the vehicle is an historical nod to the very first successful airplane, the Wright Flyer, which flew at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903.

The company says the vehicle is so simple to use that it doesn't need a pilot's license.

But despite being touted as a "car," the Flyer more closely resembles a hovercycle from Star Wars, with its handlebar and straddle seat. The prototype also features eight propellers and two pontoons for water landings.

Kitty Hawk is one of two companies—the other being Zee.Aero—that are personally funded by Google founder Larry Page to develop flying cars.

"We've all had dreams of flying effortlessly. I'm excited that one day very soon I'll be able to climb onto my Kitty Hawk Flyer for a quick and easy personal flight," Page told the New York Times.

No price nor release date has yet been set for the Kitty Hawk Flyer, but the company is inviting the public to sign up for "Flyer Discovery Memberships" which will put subscribers on a wait list with a $2,000 discount off the final product's retail price. — GMA News
