Code Vein trailer unveiled by Dark Souls publisher

“Dark Souls” published Bandai Namco Entertainment has just unveiled the first trailer for “Code Vein,” an action-RPG revolving around vampires and a dark world overrun with monsters.

An entirely new IP, “Code Vein” is set in a not-too-distant dystopian future. Civilization as we know it has ended, thanks to a worldwide catastrophe brought about by the mysterious Thorns of Judgment. At the center of all this ruin lies Vein, the last bastion of humanity.

Vein is home to the Revenants, individuals with superhuman abilities called Gifts. But this power comes at a cost: an insatiable lust for blood. Revenants who allows themselves to become enslaved by this thirst lose what is left of their humanity, and become monstrous ghouls called Lost.

You play as one of these Revenants in “Code Vein.” The trailer seems to suggest the gameplay will be similar to the Soulsborne games’, complete with timely dodge rolls and gigantic enemies. Of course, we won’t know for sure until the publisher shares a dedicated gameplay video.

In Vein, you’ll be given the opportunity to choose a companion from its many residents, who will then accompany you on your travels. This adds an interesting layer of strategy to the game, as a companion that complements your play style can give you an edge in battle. The monsters look pretty tough, so you’ll probably need all the help you can get.

Devices called Blood Veils not only function as clothing and armor, they also allow you to drain your enemies’ blood. You can then use this blood to enhance your powers through a process called Blood Smelting.

“Code Vein” will also feature a diversity of weapons, such as single-handed swords, great swords, hammers, spears, and more.

“Players can change their form to increase their strength, weaken enemies, and utilize new weapon abilities with overpowered attacks,” stated Bandai Namco. “Utilizing the vast array of weaponry along with each character’s Gift, players can adapt and strategize to a variety of battle conditions that suit their play styles.”

A month ago, Bandai Namco teased gamers with a video simply called “New Project – Teaser Trailer.” It featured beautifully hand-painted visuals and animations, and the tagline, “Prepare to Dine.” Said tagline, of course, brought to mind “Dark Souls’ ” own “Prepare to Die,” which led some to believe the company was hinting at a new Soulsborne game.

“Code Vein” is being developed by the team behind “God Eater.” Hiroshi Yoshimura is directing, Keita Iizuka is producing, and Yusuke Tomizawa is serving as the project lead.
