IT expert urges netizens to change their passwords after Facebook security breach

A local IT expert on Sunday called on the public to change their passwords on social media sites, particularly on Facebook, following the recent data breach that affected over 50 million users worldwide.

In an interview on GMA Super Radyo dzBB, Jerry Liao urged users to reset their passwords as a safety precaution.

"Ang isang pinapayo is you change your password, palitan mo. Although nakakapasok ka ngayon using your old password, but just to be sure, palita mo 'yung password mo para sigurado," said Liao.

His remarks came after Facebook on Friday said that hackers stole digital login codes which allowed them to take over 50 million accounts, said to be the worst security breach ever given the unprecedented level of potential access.

"Just to make sure, even if sinasabi ng Facebook ngayon na naayos nila 'yung sistema... Baka meron pang ibang natitira diyan, baka may weakness pa," said Liao.

He also recommended that the public create a unique password for each social media account they have, to lessen the risk of being compromised.

"We are now using our Facebook account to register dun sa iba't ibang application. 'Yung third party application, ang ginagamit mo Facebook din. Kung na-compromise ka, lahat ito, makukuha din," he explained. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA News
