Facebook just launched Messenger translations in Filipino

Social networking site Facebook on Monday launched Filipino as the newest language that can be auto-translated in Messenger.

Currently, M Translations supports five languages and is available to people using Messenger in six countries including US, Mexico, France, Spain, Brazil and now the Philippines.

These are automated using Facebook’s own translation engine based on neural machine translation technology, the same technology that translates posts and comments on Facebook and Instagram.

When a user receives a message in a different language in Messenger, Facebook's AI Assistant M will ask if the user would like to translate the message into the preferred language, for example, Filipino.

If the user taps ‘Yes,’ M will then offer to auto-translate all future foreign-language messages in that conversation into Filipino.

Facebook’s AI assistant M now translates Messenger conversations from English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese to Filipino and vice versa.

This translation feature will enable people to connect with other people who speak differently, despite language barriers.

Auto-translations are enabled on a per-conversation basis which means users can withdraw from the said feature at any time.
