Philippine internet speed slightly down in January 2022 —Ookla


The Philippines’ internet speeds showed slight decreases in January 2022 primarily due to the damage brought by Typhoon Odette on telecommunications infrastructure, data by global speed monitoring firm Speedtest by Ookla showed.

The country’s median download speed for mobile internet slowed to 17.95 megabits per second (Mbps) from 19.20 Mbps in December 2021

The Philippines’ fixed broadband median download speed, on the other hand, decreased to 49.52 Mbps from 50.26 Mbps in the prior month.

Smart earlier said it has already restored 91% of wireless services and 67% of fixed services in the Visayas region. 

It has also restored 83% of wireless services and 90% of fixed services in the Palawan area; and 98% of wireless services and 99% of fixed services in Mindanao.

Globe also said services have also been restored in the Negros Island where calls, texts, and data for customers are already available.

It has fully restored services in Negros Occidental, while services are back up in 21 municipalities in Negros Oriental.

Full restoration efforts are still ongoing in Globe sites in Bohol, Cebu, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte.

For Smart, full restoration efforts on telco facilities are still under way in Smart sites in Bohol, Cebu, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Negros Occidental Negros Oriental, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Palawan and Misamis Oriental.

Fiber internet provider Converge ICT Solutions has said its network operations in Iloilo, Capiz, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro and Davao were also affected.

DITO Telecommunity, likewise, said its services were also affected in Visayas and Mindanao.—LDF, GMA News
