PHIVOLCS app allows public to assess homes for earthquake safety
In light of recent strong earthquakes that have rocked the country and concerns about poor infrastructure, how exactly can one feel safe at home? You can find the answer in an application that was introduced by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS)!
Launched in 2021, PHIVOLCS’ “How Safe is My House?” application was made for a self-assessment for 1-2 storey concrete hollow block (CHB) houses and buildings in the country.
According to PHIVOLCS, the app intends to determine if a structure is safe in case of a strong earthquake and aims to increase awareness of proper construction practices and standard design.
The test features questions regarding how and when the house was built and designed, the basic types of materials used in construction, and the overall condition of the house.
The results will reveal your house’s score and a simulation showing your home’s condition in case of a strong earthquake, as well as suggestions and recommendations on the next steps to reinforce your home.
“The initial result will verify whether your house was properly built and followed appropriate construction procedures and recommended measures or if it will require necessary strengthening,” PHIVOLCS said.
“This test shall lead to a more detailed assessment with assistance from building experts for what the house owners need to know about their houses, allay their fears and confusion, and learn what to do thereafter,” it added.
“How Safe Is My House?” is available for download through Apple's App Store or Google Play Store, or through https://howsafeismyhouse.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph/.
The project was created through joint efforts of PHIVOLCS, the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), and the Association of Structural Engineers Philippines (ASEP). —VBL, GMA Integrated News
