Filipino scientist urges adoption of robotics strategies of Denmark, Singapore

The Philippines could improve its robotics industry by adopting the best practices of Denmark and Singapore, a Filipino scientist said.

"The advancement of robotics in these countries is associated with a highly automated car manufacturing sector and other industries such as metal and machinery, rubber and plastic, and food and beverage," the Department of Science and Technology–Metals Industry Research and Development Center said.

In his Balik Scientist Program exit presentation, Dr. Albert Causo discussed lessons from Singapore and Denmark on building strong linkages among research institutions, industry players, and government to accelerate robotics research, commercialization, and Industry 4.0 adoption.

He said that Philippine robotics research and development must focus on on-the-ground industry realities and respond to operational requirements.

“Research efforts must be driven by actual business pain points, particularly those faced by MSMEs," said Causo, CEO and co-founder of Hand Plus Robotics Pte. Ltd. and co-founder and Program Director of ALGOrhythm Robotics Center, Inc. "Industry 4.0 investments only create value when they improve productivity—allowing firms to take on more orders reliably, expand operations, create jobs, and stimulate broader economic activity."

According to the DOST, Causo strengthened the capabilities of the Advanced Mechatronics, Robotics, and Industrial Automation Laboratory (AMERIAL) during his Balik Scientist engagement by providing technical expertise and strategic direction, especially in support of the Connected and Unified Autonomous Technologies with Automation and Robotics (CUATRO) Program. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
