DOST-PTRI, DFA partner to enhance PH textiles' global competitiveness
The Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) and the Department of Foreign Affairs–Office of Cultural Diplomacy (DFA-OCD) have signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) aimed at strengthening the international competitiveness of the Philippine textile industry.
The MOA was signed by DOST-PTRI Director Julius Leaño Jr. and DFA-OCD acting head Arlene Magno on Wednesday.
It broadens cooperation of the two agencies in promoting Philippine textiles as both technological innovations and vital expressions of cultural heritage on local and international platforms.
Through the MOA, the two agencies will collaborate by sharing expertise, information, and resources to foster the development, promotion, and worldwide recognition of Philippine textiles.
These include Philippine tropical fabrics, Philippine handwoven textiles, natural fibers and dyes, and Philippine silk.
The partnership is also looking into engaging in joint promotion and advocacy, including cultural exhibitions and showcases at embassies, foreign missions, and international events, to position Philippine textiles as cultural and innovative assets locally and globally.
They also plan to expand capacity-building and knowledge-sharing programs for cultural officers, embassy staff, designers, and other stakeholders through workshops, trainings, seminars, publications, and consultations on Philippine textile innovations.
The two agencies are committed to developing and prototyping Philippine-branded products, such as souvenirs, decor, gifts, and formal wear, for diplomatic and state functions.
They plan to strengthen cultural diplomacy initiatives and partnerships through technical guidance and advisory support for textile technologies, production, and heritage practices.
These initiatives are expected to expand opportunities for Telang Pinoy, paving the way for growth and recognition from local communities to the global stage.
With the theme “Stitching Futures,” DOST-PTRI conducted the 2026 National Textile Convention in January, which aims to strengthen the Philippine textile industry for global competitiveness and sustainability. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
