The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has assisted nine micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Pangasinan in adopting solar technology, allowing them to cut power consumption by as much as 90%.

Through its Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), the nine MSMEs include the DL Hatchery and Balut Industry, which installed a 15-kilowatt solar panel system, reducing its annual electricity consumption by 53.2%.

DOST said the R&E Poultry Farm achieved a 43.07% reduction in energy use, while Rillera Farm had a 90% drop in monthly electricity expenses, which is from P135,000 to P13,500.

Gerrilaide Farm reduced its energy costs by 78.3%, contributing to a 15% increase in annual gross income.

Moon Light Farm had a 35% decrease in electricity use, resulting in a 15% increase in gross sales.

Meanwhile, the annual electricity consumption of Unicolor Printing Press decreased by 60.82% after investing in solar technology.

“Before, we paid approximately P60,000 per month. Now, our lowest bills range from zero to PHP2,000,” said Teodora Dar, owner of Unicolor Printing Press.

“Through regular monitoring of energy outputs and operational efficiency, we ensure that these interventions continue to perform at peak capacity—helping our local entrepreneurs remain competitive,” DOST-Pangasinan Provincial Director Arnold Santos said.

SETUP is a nationwide strategy to encourage and assist MSMEs to adopt technological innovations to improve their products, services, and operations; increase their productivity and competitiveness, and develop new products.

It aims to strengthen the country’s innovation system by enabling MSMEs and identified entities to address their technological requirement and limitations to improve productivity and efficiency. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA News
