Facebook, Messenger, Instagram outage trending on X

The topics "Facebook down" and "Instagram down" trended on X (formerly known as Twitter) in the Philippines on Friday night after numerous reports of inaccessible Meta social media accounts.

Downdetector reported outages for Facebook on both the app and the website, while others were unable to log in.

Other platforms that were affected include Instagram and Messenger.

During the outage, Meta communications director Andy Stone said Meta was aware of the issues and its people were working to resolve them.

On X (formerly Twitter) at around 11:40 p.m. in the Philippines, Meta communications director Andy Stone said they were coming back, although still not at 100 percent.

"We're coming back, though it may take a bit of time for everything to be fully back to normal," Stone said.

According to DownDetector, tens of thousands of reports occurred around 8:40 a.m. (US time). The peak of 113,000 was reached at 8:54 a.m.

Reported problems are divided as follows: 56% on the mobile app, 25% on login issues, and 13% on the platform's website. Reports came from all over the world.

Even DownDetector, a platform used to check for outages, is showing a "Page Not Found" tab when looking for Facebook. The website briefly displayed the number of reports before returning to the error page.

On Reddit, users are expressing relief knowing the issues are because of the worldwide outage, rather than a personal account problem like hacks or bans.

Meanwhile, users have also noticed issues when accessing Instagram and the WhatsApp desktop feature.

Hacked? Ran out of data?

Users of Meta's platforms in the Philippines responded with humor and confusion after reporting problems accessing the social media apps on Friday night.

Responding to a GMA News Facebook post asking netizens about the status of their accounts after services were restored, some users said they initially thought the platforms had been hacked.

“Akala ko nahack, it's a frank [sic] pala," said Mansul Wanhar.

(I thought my account had been hacked. Turns out it was just a prank.)

One user said she initially believed she had run out of mobile data during the outage.

"Yung akala mo naubusan ng data," said Roda Buraga.

(You know that feeling when you think you've run out of data?)

One netizen said she even uninstalled and reinstalled the Facebook app in an attempt to fix the issue.

"May pagrefresh pa ko ng Wi-Fi... uninstall at install ng FB," said Divine Grace Molina dela Cruz.

(I even refreshed my Wi-Fi connection and uninstalled and reinstalled Facebook.)

Meanwhile, another user likened the disruption to a romantic relationship.

"Parang sya lang nawala pero bumalik," said Justine Bolima.

(It’s like someone who suddenly disappears, only to come back later.)

In the US, social media publisher Lad Bible reported that Facebook and several other Meta-owned platforms appear to have gone down worldwide, leaving millions of users unable to access their accounts.

It said websites such as Downdetector began to notice a spike in users reporting error messages when trying to access the social media app on its web and mobile sites.

Gamerant reported, "The amount of traffic being directed to Facebook's Down Detector Page (to report issues) has crashed the site itself, with it going down temporarily as a result of the ongoing issues with the service."
