9 areas still under Signal No. 3 as Tisoy slightly weakens


Signal No. 3 was still raised in nine areas as Typhoon Tisoy slightly weakened on Tuesday noon and continued to move toward the Batangas and northern Oriental Mindoro area, according to PAGASA.

In its 11 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Tisoy made its third landfall at 8:30 a.m., this time over Marinduque. Tisoy's first landfall was over Gubat, Sorsogon at 11 p.m. on Monday and was followed at 4 a.m. on Tuesday over Burias Island, Masbate.

According to PAGASA, Romblon, Marinduque, Mindoro provinces, Calabarzon, Metro Manila, Bataan, Pampanga and Bulacan may expect frequent to continuous heavy to intense rains until late Tuesday afternoon. Occasional to frequent heavy rains, meanwhile, are also likely over Bicol Region and the rest of Central Luzon.

PAGASA forecast intermittent heavy rains over Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and the northern portions of Negros Provinces.

Meanwhile, between late afternoon of Tuesday to Wednesday morning, frequent to continuous heavy with isolated intense rains are expected over Mindoro Provinces, Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Rizal, and Northern Quezon including Polillo Islands.

Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Marinduque, Romblon and the rest of Calabarzon may also experience occasional downpours. Calamian Islands will likely have intermittent heavy rains.

Residents of the aforementioned areas were advised to take precautionary measures for possible flooding and landslides.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals

PAGASA said that Signal No. 3 is raised over the following areas:

  • Southern portion of Quezon (Perez, Alabat, Quezon, Mauban, Sampaloc, Lucban, Tayabas, Pagbilao, Lucena, Sariaya, Candelaria, Dolores, Tiaong, San Antonio, Atimonan, Padre Burgos, Agdangan, Plaridel, Unisan, Pitogo, Gumaca, Lopez, Macalelon, General Luna, Calauag, Catanauan, Guinayangan, Tagkawayan, Buenavista, Mulanay, San Narciso, San Francisco, San Andres)
  • Marinduque
  • Oriental Mindoro
  • Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island
  • Batangas

PAGASA also warned of possible storm surge of up to three meters in height over coastal areas in Batangas, Marinduque, Mindoro Provinces, Romblon, Cavite, and Batangas.

It added that maritime travel is risky over the seaboards of areas under tropical cyclone wind signals, as well as over the seaboards of Northern Luzon, the western seaboard of Palawan, the seaboards of Visayas, and the northern and eastern seaboards of Mindanao.

As of 10 a.m., the center of Tisoy was located 55 kilometers east of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.

It has maximum sustained winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 205 kph.

Tisoy is moving west at 25 kph and is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday morning.

Work, classes suspended

Overnight, Tisoy battered various provinces in Luzon and Visayas. Houses were damaged, trees fell, and cellphone signals were down in some areas.

As part of safety measures, classes for Tuesday and Wednesday were canceled in areas to be affected by Tisoy. Airport authorities announced the cancellation of some flights for Tuesday and Wednesday, due to bad weather. The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), meanwhile, will suspend its operations from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Tuesday.

Bus trips to Southern Luzon, Bicol, Samar and Biliran from Araneta Center Bus Terminal in Cubao, Quezon City were also canceled on Tuesday.

Malacañang suspended work in government offices and classes in all levels in Metro Manila beginning Tuesday noon due to bad weather brought by Typhoon Tisoy. —Dona Magsino/KBK, GMA News
