Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 remains in place over several areas in Mindanao and in Eastern Samar where Tropical Storm Auring (international name: Dujuan) is expected to make landfall by Sunday evening or Monday morning, PAGASA said on Sunday afternoon.

Auring continued to maintain its strength as it began to move northwestward of the Philippines.

"On the forecast track and its probability cone, this storm may initially make landfall over the Dinagat Islands-Eastern Samar (southern portion including Homonhon Island)-Leyte area between tonight or tomorrow early morning," the advisory read.

Meanwhile, more areas were placed in TCWS No. 1, where winds of 30 to 60 kilometers per hour may be expected in at least 36 hours, or intermittent rains may be expected within the same timeframe.

"There is an increasing likelihood that 'AURING' will weaken into a tropical depression before it makes landfall due to persistent high vertical wind shear associated with the surge of the Northeast Monsoon. However, the possibility that the storm will maintain its strength until landfall is not yet ruled out," PAGASA said.

The weather bureau said Auring is expected to weaken "considerably" after landfall due to its significant terrain interaction and increasing wind shear.

Moving forward, PAGASA said light to moderate with at times heavy rains are likely over Visayas, Bicol Region, Mimaropa, Quezon, Aurora, Isabela, and Cagayan on Monday, February 22. —Jon Viktor Cabuenas/KG, GMA News
