Emong intensifies into a typhoon

Tropical Cyclone Emong has intensified into a typhoon on Thursday morning, according PAGASA.

“‘EMONG’ (International name: CO-MAY) has intensified into a Typhoon and is also being monitored within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR),” PAGASA said.

“All are advised to monitor official updates from DOST-PAGASA,” it added.

Emong as of 8 a.m. was spotted 220 kilometers west of Dagupan City with winds and gustiness of 120 to 150 km per hour (kph). It was moving south southeast slowly.

In an 8 a.m. bulletin, the state weather bureau placed the following areas are under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals:

  • The western portion of La Union (Luna, Balaoan, Bacnotan, San Juan, City of San Fernando, Bauang, Caba, Bangar)

Dante, Tropical Depression

The low pressure area (LPA) outside the Philippine area of responsibility is now a tropical depression.

GASA said the tropical depression as of 8 a.m. was located 2,080 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon.

“The Low Pressure Area (LPA 07i), which is outside the PAR, has developed into a tropical depression and is still being monitored,” PAGASA said.

“All are advised to monitor official updates from DOST-PAGASA,” it added.

The tropical cyclone has winds and gustiness of 45 to 55 kilometers per hour (kph). It was moving north northwest at 15 kph.

PAGASA is also monitoring Tropical Storm Dante inside PAR.

Class cancellations

Classes at all levels and government work on Thursday, July 24, in parts of Luzon and Visayas have been suspended due to inclement weather.

Landslides

Meanwhile, some families evacuated after landslides hit several areas in Baguio City due to the heavy rains from the combined effects of Severe Tropical Storm Emong, Tropical Storm Dante, and the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, according to a report on GMA Integrated News’ Unang Balita on Thursday.

A landslide was reported at a slope protection project in Barangay Apugan-Loakan, EJ Gomez reported. Six families stayed in evacuation centers and took shelter in other places.

In Barangay Pacdal, a landslide also affected Liteng Elementary School.

A private construction site in Barangay Loakan Proper was also hit by a landslide. Two quarters of workers were damaged.

In Barangay Camp 7, a landslide also blocked aroad.

The Department of Science and Technology as well as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources warned of possible flooding and landslide incidents in different regions in the country.

There are over 3,000 "very highly susceptible" barangays in 15 provinces in Bicol, Cagayan Valley, MIMAROPA, and Western Visayas.

Evacuation Centers

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Thursday inspected the evacuation centers in San Mateo, Rizal to check the situation of residents affected by the bad weather. 

Marcos personally checked the situation of families in Maly Elementary School and Santa Ana Covered Court.  

Around 546 families are staying in Maly Elementary School while 497 families are taking shelter in the Santa Ana Covered Court. 

In San Mateo Elementary School, there are 744 families staying in the area. 

A total of 3,899 families or 14,390 individuals are affected by the onslaught of the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) in San Mateo.

In Cainta, Rizal, 842 families or 3,440 persons were affected while in Taytay, a total of 858 families or 3,696 persons were displaced due to rains and floods. 

All evacuation centers remain under close monitoring and are being assisted by the local government and concerned national agencies. 

Food packs from the Department of Social Welfare and Development were being distributed to the residents. 

Cainta, Rodriguez and San Mateo were placed under state of calamity due to the impacts of bad weather. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
