GUIDE: How to get valid government IDs
From job applications to banking and travel, having a valid ID is essential. However, for many Filipinos, knowing where to start—and how long the process takes—can be confusing.
To help, GMA News Online has put together a simple guide to some of the most commonly accepted government IDs and how to obtain them:
National ID (PhilSys)
Issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the national ID contains key personal information such as the PhilSys Number, full name, facial image, sex, date of birth, blood type, and address.
To apply:
- Register online or visit designated registration centers
- Provide personal information
- Complete biometric capture
Delivery may take several weeks to a few months, depending on volume and location. Digital versions (ePhilID) may be issued earlier.
Passport
Issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the passport is considered a primary valid ID, serving as proof of identity and nationality for travel within and outside the country.
To apply:
- Book an appointment online
- Prepare required documents (e.g., PSA birth certificate and a valid ID)
- Appear for personal processing
Processing time is around 12 working days for regular applications and 6–7 working days for expedited processing, excluding courier delivery.
Driver’s License
Issued by the Land Transportation Office (LTO), applicants must be at least 16 years old, physically and mentally fit to drive, and able to read and write in English or Filipino.
They must also have no unsettled traffic violations. Foreign applicants must be at least 18 years old, have stayed in the country for at least one month, and provide proof of residence for at least six months.
To apply:
- Secure a student permit
- Complete the required driving course
- Pass written and practical exams
- Apply for a non-professional or professional license
Student permits may be issued within the day, while full licenses depend on exam completion and may also be released on the same day upon approval.
Postal ID
Issued by the Philippine Postal Corporation, the Postal ID serves as proof of identity and address.
How to apply:
- Submit an application form and required documents, including one valid ID or proof of identity
- Provide proof of address
- Complete biometric capture
Processing time is around 10 to 15 working days, with rush processing available in some areas.
A valid ID is required for everyday transactions, from opening bank accounts to applying for jobs and accessing government services.
Knowing the process—and how long it takes—can help Filipinos plan ahead and avoid delays.
While requirements vary, most applications typically require:
- A birth certificate (usually from PSA)
- Proof of identity or supporting documents
- Personal appearance for biometric capture
Reminder:
- Book appointments only through official websites or verified accounts
- Avoid fixers or unauthorized agents
- Wear decent clothing for passport photo capture
- Monitor announcements from issuing agencies for updates on processing times
