BIR warns taxpayers vs fake letter using name of BIR chief
The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Wednesday warned the public about a fake letter using the name of BIR commissioner Charlito Martin Mendoza to pressure recipients into complying with fraudulent orders.
In an advisory posted on its Facebook page, the BIR shared a copy of the fake letter, which supposedly discussed the agency’s guidance on a “full refund agreement” and told the recipient to pay alleged tax obligations.
“The BIR warns that this modus uses FAKE letters, FALSIFIED tax language, and the UNAUTHORIZED use of the Commissioner’s name to pressure recipients into making payments or complying with FRAUDULENT directives,” the agency said.
The BIR urged the public to verify suspicious letters, notices, and directives with the BIR before taking any action.
The public is also advised to report questionable documents or transactions through the BIR’s official channels. — JMA, GMA News
