The Philippine National Police’s Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) on Friday warned the public against scammers impersonating PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. and urgently requesting for a transfer of funds to personal bank accounts.
In an advisory on its Facebook page, the PNP-ACG said the con artists pose as the PNP chief and other PNP officials in duping victims of their money.
The advisory warned against these “red flags” in such fake messages:
- The message came from an unknown number,
- It has an urgent tone and there is pressure to comply,
- There is a request for a money transfer to a personal account,
- No official letter or document is provided, and
- It uses a non-official organization name.
The PNP-ACG reminded the public that the PNP chief will never ask for money.
“Always verify through official C, PNP hotlines. Report suspicious messages immediately,” the advisory added. — JMA, GMA News
