Authorities closed Congressional Avenue Bridge in Quezon City to motorists on Sunday after parts of the bridge were damaged due to a fire on Saturday night.

Both sides of the bridge (also known as Culiat Bridge), in the direction toward EDSA, and the direction toward Mindanao Avenue, were closed to traffic after parts of the bridge were found to have lifted, according to a report by Carlo Mateo on Super Radyo dzBB.

A fire broke out among houses made of light materials located underneath the bridge on Saturday night. It reached the fourth alarm before the fire was put out.

A big pipe of Maynilad located in the middle of the bridge was also damaged.

Authorities cordoned off the bridge which sits at the border of Barangay Ramon Magsaysay and Barangay Bahay Toro.

Traffic was rerouted toward Cagayan Street and Villa Socorro Street.

Thousands of motorists pass the bridge every day, the Quezon City Government said.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte visited the damaged bridge on Sunday and also checked on the 45 families affected by the fire.

The affected residents were temporarily brought to Bago Bantay Elementary School.

The Quezon City Government said it will await the recommendation of the Department of Public Works and Highways as to the duration of the bridge closure, and whether or not motorcycles will be allowed to pass through.
