Duterte signs law declaring holiday to commemorate Yamashita surrender

President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law declaring September 3 a special working holiday in the country to commemorate the surrender of Japanese Imperial Army general Tomoyuki Yamashita during World War II.

Duterte signed Republic Act 11216 on February 14.

Yamashita surrendered in Kiangan, Ifugao several weeks after the announcement of Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945. He was later found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to death in 1946.

The President also signed Republic Act 11217 declaring January 17 as James Leonard Tagle Gordon Day, a special non-working holiday in Olongapo City and at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

According to the law, the James Leonard Tagle Gordon Day is in recognition of the “achievements, contributions, and heroism” of the first elected mayor of Olongapo. He was the father of Senator Richard Gordon. — MDM, GMA News
