WALANG PASOK: Classes, gov't work suspended in Davao, VisMin areas after magnitude-7.4 earthquake

Local governments in Davao Region and parts of Visayas and Mindanao ordered the immediate suspension of classes and government work on Friday, October 10, following a powerful magnitude-7.4 earthquake that struck off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental.
The Davao City government announced the suspension of classes in all levels, both in public and private schools, to allow authorities to promptly assess the safety of infrastructure and facilities in the metropolis.
"In view of the recent earthquake and to give way to the conduct of rapid damage assessment of infrastructures and facilities, classes in all levels, public and private educational institutions, in Davao City are hereby suspended immediately," the city government said in an advisory.
In neighboring Davao Oriental, Governor Generoso town also suspended classes and government work.
"Classes at all levels and work in national and local government offices within the Municipality of Governor Generoso are suspended today, Friday, 10 October 2025, due to the 7.6-magnitude earthquake," the order read.
"Private offices may adopt as appropriate," it added.
Davao de Oro also announced the immediate suspension of work and classes except for frontline offices.
Meanwhile, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Soccsksargen (Region XII) has announced multiple suspensions in the region covering General Santos City, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato, and areas in the provinces of Cotabato and Sarangani.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the earthquake occurred at 9:43 a.m. and had a depth of 10 kilometers. Its epicenter is located off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental.
PHIVOLCS reported that the earthquake registered at magnitude-7.6 before downgrading it to 7.5 before 11 a.m., and 7.4 before noon.
The agency has warned of possible aftershocks but said there was no tsunami threat following the earthquake. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
