WALANG PASOK: Classes, gov't work suspension in parts of Surigao del Norte, Oct. 17, 2025

Classes and work in government offices were suspended in parts of Surigao following a magnitude 6.0 earthquake recorded in the ocean near General Luna, Surigao del Norte at 7:03 a.m. Friday.

The local government unit of General Luna announced on Facebook that all classes are suspended until further notice. Other precautionary measures include:

  • Suspension of inter-island travel, port operations, and sea-related activities.
  • Mandatory evacuation of residents in coastal and low-lying areas to higher ground, prioritizing vulnerable groups.
  • Suspension of work in government offices, except for emergency, health, and relief responders.
  • Suspension of work in private offices, with flexible arrangements encouraged.
  • Activation of emergency response units, including MDRRMO, PNP, BFP, Municipal Health Office, MSWDO, and barangay officials.
  • Strict adherence to official advisories from PHIVOLCS, NDRRMC, and the LGU.

 

Classes in all levels were also suspended in Claver, Surigao del Norte, as announced by Mayor Georgia Gokiangkee.

 

In Madrid, Surigao del Sur, classes in all levels were suspended. Residents were advised to follow official updates from local authorities.

 

In Surigao City, however, classes at all levels continue as of Friday morning, and city government offices remain fully operational. 

PHIVOLCS warned that aftershocks are expected and damage may occur. The local government units urged residents to stay calm, stay alert, and cooperate fully with authorities.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
