‘Machong Chismisan’ apologizes to Kris Aquino, son Josh over insensitive remarks

The hosts of the “Machong Chismisan” podcast have issued a public apology to Kris Aquino, her son Joshua “Josh” Aquino, and the entire Aquino family over their insensitive remarks about Josh.

In a statement posted on Thursday evening via Facebook, the podcast expressed remorse over the incident and accepted responsibility for its actions and behavior during the episode.

“We take full accountability for our actions and behavior during the episode. We acknowledge that our conduct was inexcusable, deeply insensitive, and hurtful,” the statement read.

“We recognize the impact of our actions, and we do not wish to make excuses for the harm we have caused.”

The podcast also apologized to families caring for children with special needs, the broader community of persons with disabilities (PWDs), and the general public, recognizing that the incident went beyond the Aquino family and disrespected the lived experiences and dignity of other people.

As part of their efforts to take responsibility, the hosts of “Machong Chismisan” said they have proactively taken down all content related to the episode.

“While removing the content does not undo the harm we have caused, we hope this action demonstrates our sincere remorse and our commitment to being accountable for our mistake,” the podcast said.

The podcast also expressed its willingness to work with organizations and advocates dedicated to protecting the rights, dignity, and welfare of children with special needs and persons with disabilities.

It mentioned the Autism Society Philippines, the National Council on Disability Affairs, legislators, public officials, members of the entertainment industry, and other advocacy groups and individuals from whom it is open to learning.

“Beyond expressing our deep remorse, we recognize that accountability must be accompanied by meaningful action, a willingness to listen, and a genuine commitment to learning and doing better,” the statement read.

The podcast hosts added that they fully accept their responsibility for their actions and words.

"To the Aquino family, especially to Ms. Kris Aquino and Josh, we sincerely offer our apologies. We understand that our apology is not enough to erase the pain we have caused, but we hope to show our remorse and our willingness to learn through our next steps."

The apology came after the podcast drew widespread criticism over a now-deleted episode titled “Ang Pagbabalik Ni Kris Aquino,” in which the hosts mocked Josh by comparing him with his younger brother, Bimby, and making derogatory remarks about his disability.

Following the backlash, “Machong Chismisan” took down the October 5 episode and apologized to those offended, the PWD community, and the people mentioned.

The Pod Network also terminated its contract with the podcast.

Several celebrities, including Dingdong Dantes, Boy Abunda, and Aiko Melendez, as well as lawmakers and advocacy groups, have expressed support for Josh and condemned the derogatory remarks, calling for greater respect and understanding toward persons with disabilities.
