Alessandra de Rossi: The multifaceted artist

The name Alessandra de Rossi is not unknown to the avid filmgoers and couch potatoes of this country. This Italian-Filipina actress, together with her big sister Assunta, graced Philippine TV shows while they were growing up.

Alex eventually bagged numerous acting awards but has shown a drive to experiment in her field. In recent years, she has been making buzz in the independent film industry.

She's far from a one-dimensional artist. The actress shared that she also expresses herself through painting.

Before joining an art class last March, Alex didn’t know how to draw. She shares that she doesn’t even have good handwriting. What moved her to finally learn this craft was her need to express her thoughts.

“Sayang ’yung mga ideas ko, hindi ko na-i-explain. Kapag may nagtatanong 'can you make a sketch?' sinasabi ko, 'Oh my God, I can’t!'”

Alex shares that when she and her sister were young, their mother used to post only Assunta’s drawings on the sides of their refrigerator because hers were “too abstract.” But one day, she began to sketch seriously. She figured that, other than learning the technical aspect of it, she just needed confidence and someone to tell her that she can.

Alex considers her first painting memorable. “Halatang-halatang hindi marunong, 'di ba? 1D lang lahat,” she quips.

Prior to her art class days, Alex unleashed her creativity online. Everything that she envisioned came to life via Photoshop – she mixed colors, overlapped images, and posted the end result to her photoblog hosted by Tumblr.

She also shares some of her ideas on Twitter. As early as 2009, she interacted with her fans using this platform. Although her original account was hacked the following year, she still has over 800,000 followers under her current handle, @msderossi

During her 28th birthday last year, she released her album "Adrift" online.

Alex also tried doing portraits. She made one of herself and shared with us one of her struggles.

“Sabi nila, sa drawing daw ang pinakamahirap i-drawing ay kamay. So sinubukan ko, mahirap nga.”

Alex does not consider herself a pro, so she feels that she really needs to be in the zone and focused when she wants a creative output. She says she gets more inspired to create when she’s sad, bored, or frustrated. When she’s happy, she really goes out and enjoys it. When she’s sad, she has to force herself to think about other things, producing art in the process.

While Alex may be busy working on indie films right now, she says she also wants to be a better singer and painter. -- EPE/HS, GMA News
