Former Miss World-Philippines Valerie Weigmann proud of best friend Catriona's win
Miss World Philippines 2014 and former actress Valerie Weigmann lauded her best friend and Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray for going above and beyond to win the title for the Philippines.
According to a report by Cata Tibayan on “24 Oras,” Weigmann was convinced that Gray would make it big since her friend has always been the one who would do so much to represent the Filipinos and make them proud.
“She did so much, she was promoting the Philippines...promoting the artistry [of the Philippines] and how amazing our fabrics are. I am just proud of her and that we got our fourth crown because of her,” Weigmann, who has known Gray since 2011, said.
Weigmann was referring to Gray's meticulous and elaborate selection of outfit at every turn of the competition. Gray and her team made sure that her wardrobe and accessories reflected the Filipino culture from the country's three main islands: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Gray wore a show-stopping red gown by local designer Mak Tumang inspired by the lava spewed by Mayon Volcano located in Gray's home province of Albay, as well as ear cuffs she designed herself, which featured the Philippine flag's three stars and a sun during the Miss Universe final round.

Aside from Gray's physical beauty and hard work, Weigmann also praised her friend's positivity, humility and kindness.
“Makulit talaga siya. Once you [get to] be with her, like eating out or going out with a trip, she's always upbeat, always fun to be with. She is someone you can really rely on,” Weigmann said.
“If you are not feeling well, you can call her at 3 a.m. and she will be there for you,” she added.
Gray bested 93 other candidates to win the fourth Miss Universe crown for the Philippines. The three previous Pinay Miss Universe title holders were Pia Wurtzbach (2015), Margarita Moran (1973) and Gloria Diaz (1969). —Llanesca Panti/ LDF, GMA News
