Kapuso star Janine Gutierrez bags best actress award at QCinema festival

Proving to be one of the most promising actresses of her generation, Janine Gutierrez on Friday won the best actress award at the 2019 QCinema Film Festival.

The Kapuso actress gave a powerful performance in “Babae at Baril,” which made it to the festival’s Asia Next Wave competition this year.

The Filipino psychological thriller is the solo debut of female director Rae Red, who also took home the Best Director award.

“Maraming salamat po sa lahat ng bumuo ng 'Babae at Baril', lalo na kay direk Rae Red," Janine said in her speech.

"Direk, sobrang salamat. Hindi ko alam kung anonog dasal ang ginawa ko para makarating sa 'kin tong napakagandang script mo," she added.

Janine was up against nominees Maudy Kausnaedi (Ave Maryam), Dionne Monsanto (Kaaway sa Sulod), and Ianna Taguinod (Cleaners).

For "Babae at Baril," she played the role of an ordinary saleslady whose life takes a turn after finding a peculiar-looking gun.

The movie also won the Gender Sensitivity Award.

Dedicating her win to all the strong women in the country, Janine added: “Para sa lahat ng babaeng lumaban at patuloy na lumalaban, thank you po.”

People can still catch "Babae at Baril” at selected theaters during the festival to run until October 22. —NB/KG, GMA News
