Ethel Booba disowns 'fake' Twitter account, causes confusion on social media

Confusion reigned on social media after Ethel Booba disowned what she claims is a "fake" account on Twitter.

On her Instagram, the outspoken comedian had posted a screencap of said account and said, "BEWARE of this FAKE! twitter! #StopUsingMyName #fake #fakenews #peke."

The said account had amassed a huge following since its creation in 2012. Before it was deactivated, the Twitter account with the handle @IamEthylGabison had 1.6 million followers.

Popular for its funny, relevant, and at times political tweets that always ended with her catchphrase "Charot," the Twitter account had won Ethel a book deal in 2016.

The book, titled "Charotism: The wit and wisdom of Ethel Booba," is a "collection of her best, most memorable, and most popular tweets" that made her Twitter royalty.

Ethel's move to disown the account caused her to trend on Twitter Friday morning, reaching the second spot in the Philippines' trending list.

The confusion also fueled some debates and conspiracies on the platform.

GMA News Online has reached out to Ethel for clarification regarding the issue, but has yet to receive a reply.
