Cherie Gil passes away


Actress Cherie Gil has passed away, her nephew Sid Lucero has confirmed to GMA News’ Lhar Santiago. She was 59.

Cherie was known for her long and multi-awarded acting career and memorable characters in over 100 films, television shows, and theater plays.

The daughter of Eddie Mesa and Rosemarie Gil, Cherie is the sister of fellow actors Mark Gil and Michael de Mesa.

Some of her most memorable films include Ishmael Bernal’s “Manila by Night (City after Dark)” and Peque Gallaga’s “Oro, Plata, Mata.”

She is probably most recognized for playing Lavinia Arguelles on “Bituing Walang Ningning,” who delivered the iconic line, “you’re nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat!”

Cherie’s most recent appearance on GMA includes “Legal Wives” in 2021.

In February 2022, she revealed that she moved to New York to start anew and shaved her head. – NB/RC, GMA News
