“Firefly,” GMA Public Affairs and GMA Pictures' flagship movie, made it to this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF)! It is among the six films announced in a press conference on Tuesday that comprise the 10-movie list of MMFF — a big change from the traditional eight entries, MMFF Chairman Romando Artes said.

Directed by Zig Dulay, “Firefly” is a coming-of-age road trip drama about a young boy who searches for the mythical island described in his mother’s bedtime stories.

It stars Alessandra de Rossi and Euwenn Mikaell, with Cherry Pie Picache, Epy Quizon, Yayoy Aguila, Miguel Tanfelix, Ysabel Ortega, Max Collins, and Kokoy de Santos joining the cast. The movie will also have the special participation of the Kapuso Primetime King, Dingdong Dantes!

Here are the other five movies that made it to the final list:

  • “GomBurZa” by Jesuit Communications Foundation, Inc., which stars Enchong Dee, Cedrick Juan, and Dante Rivero and is directed by Pepe Diokno
  • “When I Met You In Tokyo” by JG Productions, which stars Vilma Santos and Christopher de Leon and is directed by Conrado Peru, Rommel Penesa, and Christopher De Leon
  • “Becky and Badette” by The Ideafirst Company, which stars Pokwang and Eugene Domingo and is written and directed by Jun Robles Lana
  • “Mallari” by Mentorque Productions, which stars Piolo Pascual and is directed by Derick Carbrido
  • “Broken Hearts Trip” by Smart Films Production, which stars Christian Bables, Andoy Ranay, Iyah Mina, and Petite and is directed by Emuel Lorca

They will join the first batch of MMFF entries, which were announced in July:

  • “(K)Ampon” by Quantum Films, which stars Derek Ramsay and Beauty Gonzales and is directed by King Palisoc
  • “Penduko” by Sari Sari Network, which stars Cristine Reyes and Matteo Guidicelli and is directed by JP Laxamana
  • “Rewind” by ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc., which stars Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes and is directed by Mae Cruz- Alviar; and
  • “A Mother And Son’s Story” by Cineko Productions, Inc., which stars Sharon Cuneta and Alden Richards and is directed by Nuel Naval.

Surprisingly, "Shake, Rattle & Roll Extreme” didn't make the cut, alongside “Song of the Fireflies,” “Loyalista,” and “Nokturno.”

MMFF 2023 will run from December 2023 to January 2024.
