Lead star Barbie Forteza held a special advanced screening of her film on Friday, and “P77” showcases that there is more to the horror genre than startling scenes.
Here is a spoiler-free list of reasons to watch "P77":
It presents what Philippine horror has to offer
“P77” is packed with more than just the typical jumpscares.
The story has its fair share of twists and turns, establishing itself as more than just a horror movie. The film mixes genres like family drama and psychological thriller into one hair-raising experience.
“P77” also has several layers and tackles modern-day issues, like how children become a family’s breadwinner, choosing to work abroad over being with loved ones, and taking on odd jobs to support their family.
Veteran stars shine
These veteran actors prove that they are stars for a reason.
Gina Pareno plays Luna’s grandmother, who is also a fortune teller, so well that her character provides some much-needed comedic lines.
Jackie Lou Blanco showcases her creepy side as Sonia, whereas Carlitos Siguion-Reyna as Andrew leaves audiences confused about his intentions.
A rising star also shined — child actor Euwenn Mikaell plays Luna’s younger brother Jonas with perfect innocence while also making viewers wonder about the truth of his character.
Barbie Forteza's acting prowess
Barbie Forteza proved that her skills are fit for any and every genre.
She perfectly displays the nuances of her character Luna, who is at once a girl excited about a new job, a frustrated daughter, a loving sister, a frightened house cleaner, and everything in between.
Barbie’s facial expressions and body language can change in split seconds depending on the scene. The climax also featured her showcasing intense emotions without stopping for a breath, leaving audiences on the edges of their seats about what else is to come.
Lessons on mental health, family, and even self-love
“P77” calls for reflections about topics like trauma, mental health, family, and even self-love.
Barbie told GMA News Online ahead of the film’s advance screening that she hopes the film will shed light on an individual’s strength, and to be aware of people like Luna.
“Ang gusto kong lesson na hopefully mag-resonate with our audiences is that realizing, hopefully that in any struggles, whether in life it's or in your personal problems, always know that you are not alone and that maraming nagmamahal sa ‘yo,” she said.
Barbie added that she hopes people will reflect on the fact that not everything is in their control and “not everything is your fault.”
“I know that you have been doing your best in everything. Be kind to yourself, be more kind to yourself. Make more time with the people you love,” the actress said.
“Sana ma-realize din ng makakapanood nito na there are people like Luna na akala niyo malakas, akala niyo strong, pero sila ‘yung mas nangangailangan ng kalinga, na kailangan ng shoulder to cry on kasi minsan, sila din, hindi na nila kaya, gusto rin nila gumive up,” she added.
Additionally, “P77” also asks the question: are demons the ones that are made up or ones in real life?
