Manlilikha ng Bayan Alonzo Ayatu Saclag passes away at 83

Manlilikha ng Bayan Alonzo Ayatu Saclag has passed away. He was 83 years old.

On Facebook, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) honored Saclag, who was a master of Kalinga dance and music.

According to the NCCA, Saclag devoted his life to nurturing a profound appreciation for Kalinga culture, both within his community and beyond its confines.

In his youth in Lubugan, he immersed himself in the sounds and rituals of village life, eventually mastering traditional instruments and the intricate movements central to Kalinga ceremonies, all without formal training.

“Nevertheless, he became adept not only in the traditional Kalinga musical instruments but also in the complex dance patterns and movements that are integral to the rituals of his people,” NCCA wrote.

Driven by the desire to pass on this heritage, he established the Kalinga Budong Dance Troupe, opening his home to young learners eager to study their ancestors’ music and dances.

His lifelong work in safeguarding and promoting Kalinga performing arts earned him the Manlilikha ng Bayan distinction in 2000.

“The NCCA stands united with the nation in grieving the loss of MB Alonzo Saclag. Information regarding the State necrological services and funeral will be announced once arrangements have been finalized in collaboration with his family and the Kalinga community.”

Saclag was born on August 14, 1942 and passed away on November 29.
