MTRCB meets with streaming sites to promote responsible viewing

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) on Wednesday said it has tackled responsible viewing efforts with senior executives from Disney+, Warner Bros, and HBO in Singapore.

In a statement, the MTRCB said its chairperson and CEO Lala Sotto recently met with representatives from the three subscription video on demand (SVOD) services at the sidelines of the Asia Video Industry Association conference.

“It was a productive meeting with Disney+, Warner Bros. and HBO. All of them expressed openness to work with the MTRCB in promoting responsible media consumption,” Sotto said.

According to the MTRCB, these companies offered to the agency the use of iconic characters and themes from popular franchises like Harry Potter, DC, and Looney Tunes in promoting responsible viewing and media literacy.

The MTRCB said Disney+ wants to establish a working group with the MTRCB to ensure all content released in the Philippines complies with specific ratings, advisories and consumer guidance in line with the agency’s standards.

Disney+ is also open to collaborate on a potential public service infomercial using iconic IP such as Marvel, Pixar and classic Disney characters, the agency said.

The campaign would promote digital media literacy, highlight the importance of parental controls and strengthen awareness of age-appropriate rating for young viewers’ protection, it added.

“This possible partnership will significantly boost our engagement for nationwide responsible viewing campaigns,” said Sotto.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros and HBO also cited their successful collaborations with Philippine government agencies, such as the Department of Tourism and SK Tourism Board, as evidence of their strong commitment to culturally relevant initiatives in the country, according to the MTRCB. — LA, GMA Integrated News
