Aktor PH condemns Bong Suntay's remarks about Anne Curtis
The League of Filipino Actors, or Aktor PH, condemned the remarks made by Rep. Bong Suntay about Anne Curtis during a House committee hearing.
In a statement, the group said the comments made toward Anne, their member, were "deeply inappropriate and unacceptable." According to Aktor, Anne "was invoked in the most derogatory and sexualized manner during a formal public proceeding."
"Regardless of what point anyone may be trying to make, and even more so when coming from a public official, there is no justification for language that objectifies or degrades a woman," Aktor said.
"Such remarks diminish not only the individual concerned but also undermine the dignity of women and the respect that every person deserves."
With the incident taking place as the country marks National Women's Month, Aktor said it calls for "the continuing need to uphold gender sensitivity and basic decency in the way women are spoken about in public spaces."
"More importantly, it reminds us of our collective responsibility to reshape the way women are viewed in society - not as objects, but as individuals deserving of respect."
Aktor added that they stand firm against this culture of misogyny.
"As an organization whose principles are based on equality, empathy and mutual respect, we will not tolerate any malicious statements made against any of our members, whether in jest or in passing," the group said.
Aktor emphasized that those in public office must be responsible and have proper behavior.
"Respect for women is not optional. It is the minimum standard of public service," Aktor said.
On Tuesday, members of the House committee on justice called out Suntay for his comments about Anne during the proceedings on the pending impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte.
"Alam n'yo, minsan, minsan nasa Shangri-La ako. Nakita ko si Anne Curtis. Ang ganda-ganda pala niya. You know, may desire sa loob ko na nag-init talaga, na-imagine ko na lang kung ano'ng puwedeng mangyari, pero siyempre hanggang imagination na lang 'yon. Pero 'di naman siguro ako puwedeng kasuhan kung ano ang na-imagine ko eh," Suntay said.
Several celebrities, including Anne's sister Jasmine Curtis-Smith, have called the official out for his comments.
Suntay has issued an apology to Anne and those offended by his comments but stood by his "analogy."
