Liza Soberano, H.E.R proud to be part of PH-inspired animated film 'Forgotten Island'
Liza Soberano and Grammy Award-winning artist H.E.R are over the moon for being part of the upcoming DreamWorks animated film “Forgotten Island," which is inspired by Philippine culture.
In Aubrey Carampel’s report on “24 Oras” on Thursday, the Filipino-American stars expressed pride over the film.
“We are so immensely proud. It has always been a dream of mine to be able to be part of a project that is uniquely Filipino and really accurately represents the Philippines on a global scale that is also very universal in theme so that we could share our culture and the Philippines with the rest of the world,” Liza said.
“It's pretty incredible. I'm so proud to be Filipino and Black. Filipino culture is so unique and the fact that we touch on the folklore is amazing. You get to experience these creatures and these stories that we grew up on,” H.E.R added.
They also said that ’90s kids will easily relate to the film, as it prominently features that era. The setting is distinctly Filipino, highlighted by scenes that capture everyday moments commonly seen in local streets and neighborhoods, including the jeepney.
“They are such an important part of the setting in the Philippines. That was one thing,” H.E.R said.
“It was really cool how they used that as a symbol for the Philippine backdrop because I feel like that is something that doesn't get highlighted a lot in Filipino projects. They tend to edit it out,” Liza added.
For Liza, her role as Raissa is deeply personal, as she is able to relate closely to the character’s journey.
“It is something that I've lived through and I know that it's something that a lot of Filipinos all over the world have to go through because of the whole OFW culture,” Liza said.
“And so I'm sure so many people will be able to resonate with Raissa and with Joe, the Filipinos, the family that stays behind and is longing for their family that goes overseas. And so it's very special," she added.
As a proud Filipino-American, H.E.R, who will play Jo in the movie, said she is excited that the animated movie will also showcase Filipino culture for a global audience to watch.
“The way that it displays how we treat our family and how important family is to us in our gatherings, the food we eat, the traditions, the karaoke,” the singer said. “All of these things are so uniquely Filipino, but I feel like a lot of people around the globe will relate to and identify with and be able to appreciate and laugh at as well.”
Beyond the Filipino culture and elements, the story will also revolve around friendship.
Aside from Liza and H.E.R., the film also stars other world-class Filipino talents such as Lea Salonga, Dolly De Leon, Manny Jacinto, and Jo Koy.
More cast members include Jenny Slate and Ronny Chieng.
“Forgotten Island” released its first trailer which offers a sneak peek at Raissa and Jo, two childhood best friends.
The trailer showcases elements of Filipino culture that resonate with childhood friendships: from charm-filled friendship bracelets with personal meaning, to riding the iconic jeepney, to neighborhoods reminiscent of Filipino homes, and the classic classroom setup in Philippine schools.
The film is set for theatrical release on September 23.
DreamWorks is the American film studio behind the hit animated franchises "How to Train Your Dragon," "Shrek," and "Kung Fu Panda," among others.
