Meet Matty Juniosa, the Filipino singer making waves at 'Britain’s Got Talent'
From “The Voice USA” winner Sofronio Vasquez to “America’s Got Talent” champion Jessica Sanchez, the Philippines continues to prove itself as a powerhouse of world-class vocal talent.
Now, another Filipino artist is taking center stage in Europe.
On Sunday (Philippine time), Matty Juniosa proudly raised the Philippine flag high as he impressed the judges and audience during his audition for “Britain’s Got Talent.”
Matty quickly won over both the judges and the crowd not only with his powerful vocals but also his natural charm and humor.
The 27-year-old part-time waiter delivered a goosebump-inducing rendition of “Purple Rain” by Prince, which earned him the Golden Buzzer from Simon Cowell that automatically advanced him to the live semifinals.
As Matty’s journey to international stardom unfolds, here are five things to know about the rising Filipino singer.
1. He competed in “Idol Philippines” in 2019
Matty first stepped into the spotlight as a 20-year-old contestant on “Idol Philippines” Season 1 in 2019 and made it to the Top 12 of the competition.
During his chat with the judges of “Britain’s Got Talent,” Matty said he wanted to prove to himself that he is more than just a “singing competition loser,” which prompted him to audition for the reality singing competition’s 2026 edition.
2. He was part of the all-male vocal trio iDolls
After his stint on “Idol Philippines,” Matty and fellow contestants Enzo Almario and Lucas Garcia formed an all-male vocal trio called iDolls.
The group’s original song, “Kapangyarihan,” was featured as the finale lip sync track in the second season of “Drag Race Philippines.” The group later disbanded when Matty moved to the United Kingdom.
3. He moved to the UK in 2022
In 2022, Matty made the bold step to move to Glasgow, United Kingdom, to pursue a degree in Musical Theater at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with the help of a partial scholarship.
4. He is a theater actor
Beyond singing, Matty is also a theater actor. In 2024, he performed at Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, portraying Lola in “Kinky Boots” and Clopin in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”
A year later, he played Sonja in “Oscar at the Crown,” and just this January, he took on the role of Muzha in the musical “Ne Zha.”
5. He shares his song covers online
Matty has been consistently showcasing his talent through song covers on social media. Among his performances are renditions of “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked” and “Love Moves in Mysterious Ways” by Julia Fordham.
