Nico Waje files counter-affidavit in complaint filed by Athena Imperial

Nico Waje filed a counter-affidavit before the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office on Friday morning in connection with complaints lodged against him by former colleague and GMA reporter Athena Imperial.

Waje was accompanied by his wife, Leinel Waje, and his legal counsel, Atty. Leo Lalusis, during the filing.

According to Lalusis, the case is now submitted for resolution.

They cannot disclose the contents of the counter-affidavit "since we do not want to preempt ‘yung magiging decision ng ating honorable public prosecutor," he told the press.

"Ang importante dito is ‘yung kliyente namin, si Sir Nico, is very ready to answer any allegation against him," Lalusis said.

"And in fact, from the beginning naman, siya ‘yung naglakas ng loob para harapin ‘tong mga kaso kasi alam naman niya sa sarili niya na wala naman siyang kasalanan. ‘Yun naman ‘yung importanteng bagay dito na hinarap niya ‘yung kaso."

Last month, Imperial filed a complaint against Waje for alleged acts of lasciviousness and gender-based sexual harassment.

“This was not an easy decision. It took time, reflection, and support from the people closest to me before I found the courage to come forward,” she said.

“I am speaking not only for myself, but also for those who, for different reasons, are still unable or afraid to speak for themselves. I believe that incidents of this nature can no longer be ignored, minimized, or tolerated in any workplace or industry,” she added.

Imperial also said that she is placing her trust in the legal system and urged the public to allow the proceedings to continue without speculation.

“Out of respect for the ongoing proceedings, I will refrain from discussing further details and ask the public to allow the proper authorities to do their work without speculation or prejudgment,” she said.

“I remain hopeful that, through lawful processes and honest conversations, safer spaces and greater accountability may continue to develop for everyone.” —JCB, GMA News
