Cimorelli band one of the latest sensations on YouTube

Some talents are born. Others are made ... on YouTube.

A video of an a capella performance of five teenage sisters, taken using a single camera on a plain background of a wooden door, turned out to be one of the biggest hits on YouTube with over five million views.

Calling themselves the Cimorelli band, taken from their surname, these girls have caught the attention of worldwide audiences. Their simple, amateur, and a cappella videos have now evolved into high-quality productions that can match professional music videos.

Their recent video, a cover of “Boyfriend” which was popularized by another YouTube sensation — Justin Bieber — generated 923,176 views just one week after its posting.

With over 177,741,889 views, the Cimorelli band’s videos have a wide range of subscribers and now counts 609,250.

The Cimorelli band is a brood of six living in South California. They are: Christina, 21; Katherine, 19; Lisa, 17; Amy, 16; Lauren, 13; and Dani, 11.

“We're all sisters, (and) we've been singing together since we were very young,” the group said in an email to GMA News Online. Healthy lifestyle “People thank us for helping them gain strength and lead their lives in a better way than drinking and doing drugs. We believe very strongly in a healthy lifestyle and in the notion that everyone brings their own unique beauty and gifts to the world,” they said. “Then we hope to start touring. Performance is our number one love, and we can't wait to meet our fans from all over the world!” the band said.
According to their website, the oldest five girls launched Cimorelli as a vocal group in 2007.
In 2009, they posted an a cappella cover of Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA," the video that catapulted them to fame.

“It blew up and got 24,000 views overnight!” they said. “Then we put up several more and kept the momentum building.”

Their a cappella skills ultimately got them noticed by professionals in the music industry, according to a report of Malibu Times, a community newspaper in California.

Other covers were posted in 2010 and the band took hits by Beyonce, Bruno Mars, and Katy Perry, putting their own stamp on them. They released their first extended play in December 2011.

“Sometimes we just pick a song we all really like or we'll look at iTunes or the charts and find a song that's appropriate for the group, and we all seem to agree on it,” Christina said in the Malibu Times report.

The Cimorelli band said they did an original song entitled “Million Bucks” which has more than three million hits, apart from their music covers.
Right now, they said they are working on their new album to be released later this year.

Successors to Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber

Their videos caught the attention of British manager Sarah Stennett, who got them a contract with Universal Music records. Since then, they have been hailed as successors to other Internet sensations such as Taylor Swift and Bieber.

During the 2011 Malibu Music Awards and Festival, an event that celebrates the success of big names in the music industry and recognizes emerging new talents, they were given the “Jackson 5 Family Music Award,” according to a press release from Malibu Music Awards

Because of this, Sacramento Magazine called them “the best family performing group since the Jackson 5.”

Singing in the crib

Their parents, especially their mom, have inspired them every step of the way.

“We all started singing literally in the crib as babies,” they told GMA News Online.

Their mom, a college music major, composer, and former choir director, taught them to sing harmonies when they were four years old, the band said.

They also did dance lessons and church choir, and learned how to sing barbershop and vocal jazz.

The band's website said the girls did musical theater, appearing in several productions while immersing themselves in dance, acting, and instrument lessons. Christina and Lauren play keyboards, Amy plays rhythm guitar, Katherine plays bass, and Lisa plays the drums.

They have performed for the Boys and Girls Club Malibu Teen Center fundraisers, sung in a local choir, and recently participated in the Malibu Navy Days BBQ with a performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.”
