AlDub featured on Singapore news site
The BBC dubbed them a social media phenomenon, and Bloomberg Business saw them as a huge factor affecting sales in different markets. Now, the phenomenal love team of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza a.k.a. Yaya Dub of Eat Bulaga's Kalyeserye has caught the attention of yet another international news platform.
Straits Times Online, the digital counterpart of the Singaporean English-language broadsheet, discussed the traditional yet unique structure of the AlDub love story.
According to writer Raul Dancel, the story is reminiscient of “Cinderella” and “Romeo and Juliet,” where the guy proves his undying love for the girl by going through several challenges.
The article also mentioned the record-breaking 41 million tweets made by fans last October 24 when the “Eat Bulaga: Sa Tamang Panahon” show filled the world's largest indoor arena to the last seat.
“Experts say AlDub has been a huge success because it resonates with Filipinos pining for a return to old-fashioned values as a counter-balance to the crass culture that has become pervasive online,” Dancel said.
He added, “Beyond the storyline, the two lead stars appeal to millions because they come off as believable bearers of the values their show represents, unlike many other celebrities, who are regarded as caricatures of excess and superficiality.”
Aside from bringing happiness to viewers everyday through Eat Bulaga's Kalyeserye, AlDub has also starred in multiple commercials, including three for a fastfood chain, which reportedly hit a 470% rise in store sales after the first commercial was released.
Alden and Maine are also set to star in their first film together, “My Bebe Love,” an entry to the 2015 Metro Manila Film Festival. It also stars Vic Sotto and AiAi Delas Alas, and is directed by Jose Javier Reyes. — Bianca Rose Dabu/BM, GMA News
