Local, international celebs extend sympathy to victims of Mindanao earthquake

Several local and international celebrities have expressed their sympathy and solidarity for those affected by the powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck offshore Sarangani in Mindanao on Monday.

On Tuesday, the Office of Civil Defense said that the reported death toll from the quake has increased to 37.

Here are some of the celebrities who have offered prayers and support for those affected by the Mindanao earthquake.

Heart Evangelista

Among the celebrities who offered support was Heart Evangelista, who took to Instagram Stories to send prayers for the victims.

“Heartbroken by the news of the recent earthquake. Sending prayers to everyone affected. Please stay safe, take care of one another, and look out for your loved ones and pets,” Heart wrote.

Sarah Geronimo

Sarah Geronimo also shared a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), extending her prayers to those impacted by the disaster.

"My heart and prayers go out to all the earthquake victims. May you find strength, comfort, and hope during this incredibly difficult time," she said.

Melai Cantiveros

Meanwhile, Melai Cantiveros posted photos on Instagram showing the aftermath of the quake in her hometown of General Santos City.

“In Jesus Name tanggalin niyo na Lord ang mga ito and sana Lord makabangon ang Mindanao lalo na ang Gensan Lord sa paglindol na ito,” she wrote.

Melai said that her family was safe and called on the public to help affected communities, particularly hospitals in need of temporary shelters.

“Thank you sa lahat ng nangamusta sa pamilya ko, thank you Lord all safe sila and praying for all families na safe din sila. Panawagan na din po sa lahat ng gusto mag help need po ng more tents sa mga hospitals namin doon."

Francis Ford Coppola

Acclaimed American filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola also shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, posting behind-the-scenes photos from the filming of his 1979 war film “Apocalypse Now” in the Philippines.

"My heart goes out to those in the Philippines who experienced a tragic earthquake yesterday," Coppola wrote.

The Oscar-winning director recalled working with the indigenous Ifugao people during the production of the film and expressed concern for communities affected by the calamity.

"They helped me make ‘Apocalypse Now’ along with the Filipino people, and I will forever be grateful to all of them and wish them well during this terrible calamity. These were the most wonderful people, and I'm sure they are in great danger and suffering now," he said.

Coppola also encouraged his followers to support relief efforts by donating to the Philippine Red Cross.

Sandara Park

2NE1 member Sandara Park, who spent much of her childhood in the Philippines, also expressed concern for Mindanao residents.

"My heart is with everyone affected by the earthquake in Mindanao. Mindanao holds a special place in my heart, and I still remember the love and warmth I received there. I'm praying for everyone's safety, strength, and recovery," Sandara shared on Instagram Stories.

Thalia

Mexican singer Thalia also expressed her sympathy to the victims through a heartfelt post on X.

"Philippines, I'm deeply saddened by the news of the earthquake. Keeping everyone affected in my thoughts and prayers, and sending love, strength, and light during this difficult time."

Tay Tawan

Thai actor Tay Tawan likewise reached out to Filipinos through a message written in Tagalog.

"Sa ating mga kaibigang Pilipino, nabalitaan ko ang tungkol sa lindol at nais ko pong ipaabot ang aking taos-pusong suporta at panalangin para sa inyong kaligtasan. Ingat po kayong lahat," he wrote.

For those who wish to extend help to the victims of the Mindanao earthquake, several organizations are accepting monetary and in-kind donations.
