Los Angeles — Waking up at the crack of dawn isn't so bad when you get good news.

At the recently held 76th annual Golden Globe nominations announcement, Fil-Am actor Darren Criss bagged a nod for his portrayal of serial killer Andrew Cunanan in the Ryan Murphy-created TV series, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.”

He is competing against Antonio Banderas (“Genius: Picasso”), Daniel Bruhl (“The Alienist”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“Patrick Melrose”) and Hugh Grant (“A Very English Scandal”).

If Darren makes it, he will be the first Fil-Am to win a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture made for Television.

Darren already made waves this year when he became the first Fil-Am to win at the Emmy’s for the same role.

After finding out about his Golden Globe nom, Darren said, “Growing up, I always loved watching the Golden Globe Awards with family and friends. I’ve been lucky enough to be in the room and that alone has been a thrill. But now to be nominated is just insane! I’m honored to be included with such wonderful actors. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for the continued support and for my first individual Golden Globe nomination.”

Other firsts include Sandra Oh, co-hosting the much-awaited 76th Golden Globe Awards on January 6 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with comedian Andy Samberg, star of NBC’s Golden Globe-winning comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”

Sandra, who is the first Asian female to host the awards show, is also nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama for her performance as the M15 security officer, Eve, in the critically-acclaimed drama series, “Killing Eve.”

The blockbuster comedy, “Crazy Rich Asians,” which features our own Nico Santos, Kris Aquino and our friend and colleague Lisa Lu, also bagged a nod in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and will be competing against “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Vice.”

In the Best Motion Picture – Animated category, Filipino animators are rooting for “Spider-Man: Into the Verse.” Louie del Carmen, John Butiu and Ryan Paredes Rubi all worked on the groundbreaking animation.

While champagne bottles of Moet & Chandon filled the room, Christian Slater (“Mr. Robot”), Terry Crews (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Leslie Mann (“Blockers”), Danai Gurira (“Black Panther”), Golden Globe Ambassador and daughter of Idris Elba, Isan Elba and Executive Producer and Executive Vice-President of Television at dick clark productions, Barry Adelman, helped in announcing the nominees in the 25 categories spanning motion picture and television.

Christian was so excited to hear his name called after he was introduced by Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) president Meher Tatna that he even jumped from his seat and just decided to stand up.

Meher revealed a prestigious new annual award that will recognize the highest level of achievement in television. “Equivalent to its film accolade counterpart, the Cecil B DeMille Award, this new annual award will honor TV’s biggest names and brightest talents,” said Tatna.

“Honorees will be selected based on their outstanding accomplishments, as well as the impact and influence that their television career has had on the industry and audiences. The importance of this presentation is underscored by the fact that this is the first special achievement award of its kind since the DeMille Award was originally presented in 1952.”

After a few weeks, it was announced that the first TV awardee is comedienne Carol Burnett. — LA, GMA News
