Taylor Swift shares petition to junk anti-terror bill in the Philippines

No less than pop icon Taylor Swift backed the petition to junk the proposed Anti-Terrorism Act in the Philippines.

The American singer-songwriter had shared a bunch of petitions on her Instagram following the death of George Floyd, which sparked unrest in the United States.

Among the petitions against racism linked on her Instagram stories is the Change.org petition "Junk Terror Bill," created by user Defend UPLB.

So far nearly 400,000 have signed the petition.

It is not clear whether Swift confused the petition with another amid the many calls for justice in the US.

George Floyd's death shook Swift from her apolitical stance, prompting her to accuse US President Donald Trump of "stroking the fires of white supremacy" to her 86.4 million followers on Twitter.

Recently, she also shared a blank post on Instagram with the caption "Black Lives Matter #BlackoutTuesday."

The proposed anti-terrorism bill pending in the House of Representatives may soon be cemented as a law after President Rodrigo Duterte certified the measure as urgent, according to Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Tuesday.

Various groups have raised concerns on the possibility that the proposed law may be used to stifle dissent against the administration and usher in a series of human rights abuses.

Duterte has called for the swift passage of the bill as Congress is set to adjourn session on June 3.
