The hunt for the next 'Percy Jackson' has officially begun
The hunt for the next “Percy Jackson” has officially begun.
Rick Riordan, the author of the popular Demigod book series himself, announced the preliminary casting call for the new TV series coming to Disney+.
Applicants for the role were required to submit an audition tape wherein they would perform their favorite passage from the book series "Percy Jackson and the Olympians.”
A personal message from Riordan said the show is looking for an actor who can “play 12” with a goal to “stay true to the original story and have Percy’s character age from 12 to 16 over the course of the TV series.”
The author also stressed that the production is “committed to diverse, inclusive casting.”
“We are looking for the best person who can embody the character we all know and love from the books,” Riordan said.
“For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to disability, gender, race and ethnicity, age, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other basis prohibited by law,” he added, citing Disney’s company policy.
"Percy Jackson & the Olympians" tells the story of Percy, a once normal boy who discovers he is the son of Poseidon when he comes of age.
Two live action films have adapted the first two novels of the series, both starring American actor Logan Lerman.
The casting call for the TV series describes the character Percy Jackson as “a smart, compassionate kid, with a sharp sense of humor.”
“He's always seen himself as an outsider, in no small part because of how the world sees his ADHD and dyslexia. He's no wallflower though. He's impulsive and rambunctious, and is quick to anger when things seem unfair to him,” it adds.
“Sarcasm is just another service he offers, but beneath his cynicism is an affectionate son and loyal friend who just wants to do right by those he cares about. If only he could find a place where he fits in.” — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
