Korean music critic Kim Young Dae passes away at 48
Kim Young Dae has passed away, his family announced on his official social media account. He was 48 years old.
"We respectfully inform you. We announce the passing of Kim Young Dae. Please understand that we could not contact you personally," the statement said according to Korean outlet Chosun.
The wake was held at Chung-Ang University Hospital while the burial site is Seoul Memorial Park.
Kim Young Dae’s death was a sudden one. Just recently, the music critic appeared on “Kim Hyun Jung's News Show" for a prerecorded broadcast and continued to update his Instagram, his last post dating December 23. Chosun reported that on the day his death was announced, the broadcast was aired and Kim Young Dae talked about Christmas carols.
Born in 1977, Kimg Young Daw graduated from Yonsei University, and earned a Ph.D. in music anthropology from the University of Washington.
The music critic is known for his analysis and industry knowledge, and is credited for raising K-Pop criticism from appreciation to a cultural phenomenon.
Since 2023, Kim Young Dae was a broadcast panelist for the Grammy Awards. He also did domestic live commentary for the Billboard Music Awards and American Music Awards. He was part of the Korean Music Awards selection committee and MAMA Awards judge.
