Footballer Jorginho says hotel controversy with Chappell Roan was a 'misunderstanding'

Football player Jorginho has issued a new statement addressing the controversy involving Chappell Roan, his family, and a security guard in a Brazil hotel, saying new information has changed his understanding of what happened.

On Instagram Stories, Jorginho said that he wants to clarify what happened after “new information has come to light.”

“I made my initial statement in the heat of the moment, after hearing that my child and wife had been approached by an adult male security guard in an intimidating way. I reacted as any father would. My priority is, and always will be, protecting my family, and that is exactly what I did,” he said.

Per Jorginho, they acted on the information that was available to them, but further developments have clarified key details.

“Chappell Roan made a public statement, reached out privately to Catherine, and our teams also spoke directly. It became clear that she had no knowledge of what took place at breakfast and had not asked anyone to approach them. She was understanding and sympathetic to what had happened to our child,” he said.

According to Jorginho, the security guard has since confirmed he was representing a different artist at the time, not the singer.

“While we still do not know what prompted him to approach them, and do not believe an 11-year-old at breakfast could reasonably be seen as any kind of security threat, it is now clear that he was not acting on behalf of Chappell,” he said.

Jorginho said he was glad to set the record straight and that he regrets the impact the situation had on all parties.

He addressed the online backlash that followed the incident, stressing that he does not condone hate speech or attacks.

“Respect, empathy, and humility are values I carry and teach my family every single day,” he said.

He ended his statement by writing, “As far as I am concerned, this matter is closed.”

The issue began last month after Jorginho alleged on social media that a security guard confronted his 11-year-old stepdaughter during breakfast at a hotel in São Paulo, leaving her distressed and in tears.

The incident was initially linked to Chappell, who was in Brazil for the Lollapalooza festival, prompting backlash online and even a statement from a Rio de Janeiro official saying she would not be invited to a local festival.

Chappell later denied involvement, saying the guard was not part of her team, before Jorginho’s latest clarification. —Carby Rose Basina/JCB, GMA News
