Who was Oliver Tree? 5 things to know about the ‘Life Goes On’ singer

Oliver Tree was among the six people who died after two helicopters collided mid-air in Brazil over the weekend. He was 32.

According to reports, the helicopters crashed in the western suburbs of Rio de Janeiro and plunged into the parking lot of an electric vehicle dealership, setting around 20 cars on fire.

If you're unfamiliar with Oliver, here are five things to know about the late American artist.

1. He was a multi-hyphenate artist

Born Oliver Tree Nickell in Santa Cruz, California, in 1993, Oliver wore many hats in the entertainment industry. He was a singer, filmmaker, and comedian. He was known to self-direct his music videos and shared comedy skits across his social media platforms.

As of posting, Oliver has 6.9 million subscribers on YouTube, over three million followers on Instagram, and 16.4 million followers on TikTok.

2. He had a signature look

Throughout his career, Oliver sported an unmistakable look: a bowl haircut, colorful sunglasses, vibrant jackets, and baggy pants. His distinctive style became synonymous with the persona he built around his music.

3. 'Life Goes On' was his biggest hit

Released in 2021, Oliver’s song “Life Goes On" became a viral sensation on TikTok and other streaming platforms, which gave him international recognition.

The song was featured on the deluxe edition of his debut studio album, “Ugly Is Beautiful: Shorter, Thicker & Uglier.”

4. He was a Brit Award nominee

In 2024, Oliver was nominated for a Brit Award for International Song of the Year for his hit “Miss You,” produced in collaboration with German DJ Robin Schulz. The song gained massive success on TikTok and peaked at no. 3 on the UK Singles Chart.

5. He set a Guinness World Record

In May 2020, Oliver earned a Guinness World Record (GWR) for riding the world's largest kick scooter in Los Angeles, California. According to GWR, he attempted the feat to “fulfill a lifelong dream.”
