Gilas Pilipinas Women bow out of Asian Games after quarterfinal loss to Chinese Taipei 

Gilas Pilipinas Women's gallant stand was not enough as they absorbed an 83-71 loss to Chinese Taipei to bow out of the 2026 Asian Games on Thursday at the Aichi International Arena in Japan.

The Gilas Women played catch-up almost all throughout the game before staging a fightback in the third period, but the Filipinas ran out of steam to exit the tournament.

The recent result was similar to that of their run in the previous Asian Games, where the Gilas Women lost to South Korea in the quarterfinals as well with a lopsided 22-point defeat.

Still, Gilas had a lot of positives in the 2026 Asian Games even after missing several key pieces in Jack Animam and Kacey Dela Rosa.

Veteran Afril Bernardino led the way with 23 points, seven rebounds, and one assist while Janine Pontejos and Stefanie Berberabe chipped in 12 markers each.

Chinese Taipei stretched a 42-34 halftime lead to a 50-34 cushion after it opened the third with back-to-back triples from Ling-Chuan Huang and Ya-En Han.

The Filipinas didn't back down with Pontejos sinking a three-pointer that capped an 8-2 rampage, 52-42, before she and Kent Pastrana instigated another 10- 0 blast that pulled the Philippines to within six at 58-52.

Chinese Taipei, though, had a response to every Gilas run as it maintained its lead the rest of the way to book a spot in the semifinals.
