UAAP: UE's John Dexter Santos, Ateneo's Jay-M Leal handed one-game suspensions
University of the East’s John Dexter Santos and Ateneo de Manila University’s Jay-M Leal have each been handed a one-game suspension by the UAAP Basketball Commissioner’s Office.
Santos was suspended following a disqualifying foul during UE’s game against the University of the Philippines last Saturday.
At the 0:34 mark of the fourth quarter, Santos was called for a disqualifying foul during the Red Warriors’ game against UP.
According to the Commissioner’s Office, “Santos used his right forearm to hit the back of the head of University of the Philippines’ Dikachi Udodo before striking the latter’s face with the same forearm.”
“The incident was initially called an unsportsmanlike foul but was upgraded to a disqualifying foul following the use of the Instant Replay System,” it added.
Santos will serve his suspension on Wednesday during UE’s game against De La Salle University.
Meanwhile, Leal was also handed a one-game suspension after accumulating two unsportsmanlike fouls.
Leal committed his first unsportsmanlike foul on October 10 when he “swung his right hand downward toward the face and shoulder of FEU’s #10 Rojan Montemayor as the latter drove to the basket, with no legitimate attempt to directly play the ball.”
“The incident was initially called a personal foul but was immediately upgraded to an unsportsmanlike foul,” according to the Commissioner’s Office.
The second incident occurred on October 17, at the 0:23 mark of the second quarter during Ateneo’s game against the University of Santo Tomas.
“While both players were positioning for a rebound, Leal swung his left elbow horizontally with force toward the neck and chest area of UST’s #12 Ice Danting,” the office said.
“Although the unsportsmanlike foul was missed by the game officials, the Commissioner’s Office retains the authority to review the incident and impose appropriate disciplinary sanctions for grave acts of misconduct to uphold the principles of fair play, sportsmanship, and the integrity of the competition, as prescribed under the UAAP House Rules and applicable FIBA regulations.”
Leal will serve his suspension on October 24 as the Blue Eagles face Far Eastern University.
