Gary David's monster performance drives Powerade's upset of top-seed B-MEG in OT

Gary David put on a performance of a lifetime as he led Powerade in pulling off an upset for the ages as the no. 8 Tigers stunned the top-seed B-Meg Llamados in overtime, 131-123, and clinched a berth in the semifinals of the PBA Philippine Cup Sunday night.              David exploded for 37 big points, including 8-of-13 from the beyond the arc, in a scorching display of outside shooting before an amazed crowd at the Araneta Coliseum.              The shooting guard out of Lyceum scored on a booming three-pointer on top of the key to send the game into overtime, 115-115, and then, accounted for the Tigers’ first 10 points in the extra period to complete the shocking win at the expense of the no. 1 ranked team heavily favored to contend for the All-Filipino championship.              In all, David pumped in 16 straight points bridging the fourth quarter and the overtime period in propelling Powerade’s comeback from a 17-point second quarter deficit (38-55) and from 80-94 with seven minutes left in the do-or-die encounter.              Now the Tigers, seeded eight going into the playoffs, will next face the winner of the Rain or Shine-Barangay Ginebra series in their first semifinal stint after a long, long time.              Powerade became the first no. 8 seeded team to eliminate a no. 1 ranked squad since San Miguel pulled off the feat against Talk `N Text in the 2002 Governors Cup.              “They said we had no chance whatsoever to win against B-Meg,” said David, who dropped 32 points against the twice-to-beat Llamados in the Tigers’ 97-88 win last Wednesday that set up this game of death.              “But right now, we’re in heaven.”             Top rookie pick JV Casio added 22 points before fouling out, while fellow freshman Marcio Lassiter had 19, including a dagger three-pointer late in overtime that finally doomed the Llamados.              The Tigers finished the game with 22 three-pointers.              “I have to give it to the guys. They kept believing that we could do it,” said coach Bo Perasol, who was joined during the post-game interview by Powerade board representative JB Baylon.              The loss was a heart-breaker for the Llamados, who were led by the 26 and 25 points respectively of Kerby Raymundo and Peter June Simon whose back-to-back basket in extra play put B-Meg to within 125-123 before Lassiter answered with this clinching trey.              B-Meg actually had a chance to win it in regulation after David knotted the count at 115 on a huge three-pointer. But without a timeout left, the Llamados failed to execute as James Yap was whistled for a traveling violation with 4.5 seconds remaining.              Powerade also failed to put up a shot after the Llamados’ defense forced the Tigers to commit a turnover in their final possession.              The game got a bit physical early in the third quarter when Celino Cruz and Josh Urbiztondo almost came to blows during an inbounds play.              Cruz was called for a technical foul after the replay showed him giving Urbiztondo an elbow. He was later slapped with a flagrant foul one for putting up a fighting stance against the B-Meg point guard, leading to outright ejection at the 7:12 mark and the Llamados leading 74-59.              “Duon ako na-inspire,” said David of the incident later. - OMG, GMA News               The scores Powerade (131) -- David 37, Casio 22, Lassiter 19, Anthony 13, Vanlandingham 11, Kramer 10, Cruz 6, Antonio 6, Adducul 4, Lingganay 3, Allera 0, Crisano 0.              B-Meg (123) -- Raymundo 26, Simon 25, Yap J. 23, Pingris 14, De Vance 11, Barroca 10, De Ocampo 7, Reavis 3, Urbiztondo 2, Yap R. 2.              Quarterscores: 23-30, 47-57, 78-87, 115-115 (reg). 131-123
