Arwind Santos and Kelly Williams are renewing their rivalry for the Best Player of the Conference (BPC) award in the PBA Philippine Cup. The former Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player (MVP) rivals emerged as the top contenders for the BPC award in the season-opening conference, with Santos emerging on top of the race at end of the first round playoffs.

Behind his spectacular double-double effort of 18.3 points and a league-leading 12.3 rebounds, the lanky Petron Blaze forward is currently on top of the statistical points (SPs) race with an average of 38.63 a game. That makes him six points ahead of the second-running Williams, Talk 'N Text's slam-dunking stalwart who beat Santos for the 2006 Rookie of the Year plum and the 2007 season MVP award. Santos' monster performance helped the Boosters to a third place finish at the end of the eliminations and a two-game sweep of the Meralco Bolts in their best-of-three quarterfinals series. The former Far Eastern University King Tamaraw is currently on track of becoming the first player to win the BPC plum in back-to-back fashion since Barangay Ginebra's Eric Menk did the trick in the 2004-05 season. Santos also averaged in double figures when he won the Governors Cup's individual award. He is currently fourth in league scoring behind Powerade's Gary David (22.5 ppg), B-MEG's James Yap (19.0 ppg) and Petron rookie teammate Chris Lutz (18.3 ppg). Williams lags behind Santos with an average of 32.92 SPs followed by Petron's Alex Cabagnot (31.88), James Yap (31.38), Talk 'N Text teammate Harvey Carey (30.77) and Powerade's David (3069). Completing the top 10 are Talk 'N Text's Jason Castro (30.64), Powerade rookie Marcio Lassiter (29.64), two-time league MVP Willie Miller of Barako Bull (28.80) and Alaska's Sonny Thoss (28.50). Just outside the top 10 is Rain or Shine rookie star Paul Lee with 28.27 SPs. Under PBA ruling, the top five players in the statistical race at the end of the semifinals will vie for the BPC honor in a balloting, with the winner automatically becoming a contender for the season’s MVP award. — JVP, GMA News
