PBA D-League: Gems open bid for redemption with win over Waves

Cebuana Lhuillier began its drive for redemption this conference by defeating Boracay Rum, 70-58, in Thursday's PBA D-League Foundation Cup action at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

 

The Gems were in control early on racing to a 22-11 lead in the first period then bucked the Waves' comeback bid to seal the win.

 

Kevin Alas had a team-high 20 points and Vic Manuel, the Aspirants Cup Best Player, tallied 16 points, five rebounds and six assists for the Gems.

 

The Gems are looking to get back to the finals after losing to NLEX in last year's Foundation Cup finals. 

 

"We want to earn respectability by emphasizing on defense this conference," said Cebuana Lhuillier coach Luigi Trillo.

 

Despite the huge deficit, Boracay Rum inched closer as the second half went on. They were within five as the fourth quarter rolled, 42-37, after the Gems scored just eight in the third.

Kenneth Acibar's off-the-glass three-pointer had the Waves grabbing a 45-44 lead.  

But as the momentum appeared to go into their favor, the Gems did not waver and countered with an 18-7 run to pull away again. Manuel's breakaway slam sealed Cebuana's win as the Gems enjoyed a 62-52 spread with a minute to play in the game.

 

The Gems will next face fellow conference debut winner Café France on March 27. — JVP, GMA News Scores:
