ABL: Leo Avenido's long bombs help SMB defang Cobras

Leo Avenido connected six times from downtown, on route to 33 points, to fuel a dominant San Miguel Beermen victory over the Bangkok Cobras, 86-78, Sunday at the Chulalongkorn University in the Asean Basketball League in Bankgok.
The Cobras led early, 4-1, but Avenido played the role of firefighter, extinguishing Cobra runs twice in the early going, tying things first on a triple at the 5:14 mark, 9-all, and then at 4:35 on two charities, 11-11. A Jarrid Famous bucket then gave San Miguel the lead, and they never looked back since then.   In the third quarter, a 7-0 Bangkok run cut their deficit down to six, 66-60, after two baskets by George Travis and a triple courtesy of Ratdech Kruatiwa, 1:13 left in the period. In response the Beermen unleashed a huge run, holding their opponents without a score until the 5:35 mark of the final quarter. Meanwhile, San Miguel's offense rattled off 12 straight for a commanding 18-point lead, 78-60.   Later on, Aris Dimaunahan swelled their advantage to 19, 81-62 off a Famous assist, digging a hole too deep for the Cobras to climb out off.   Darlon Johnson stuffed the stat sheet for SMB, contributing 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists, five steals and two blocks in 33 minutes, Jarrid Famous added 12, Dimaunahan chipped in 10, as the hot-shooting Beermen finished with a 52 percent shooting clip.   Bangkok was led by import George Travis and his 20 points. The Filipino backcourt of Marvin Cruz and Jai Reyes combined for 37 points, nine assists and six steals, and Gentry Lewis added a double-double of 22 points and 12 boards.   The victory kept San Miguel a step behind the AirAsia Philippine Patriots, with the former boasting of a 10-3 card, compared to the Patriots' 10-2 record.   The Beermen next see action on March 24, against the Saigon Heat.        The scores:   Beermen 86 - Avenido 33, Johnson 20, Famous 12, Dimaunahan 10, Fernandez 4, Ferriols 3, Fajardo 2, Yap 1,  Baguion 1, Cabatu 0, Gonzales 0, — Adrian Dy/RSJ, GMA News   Cobras 78 - Travis 20, Cruz 16, Lewis 15, Reyes 14, Wanna 5, Kruatiwa 3, Klahan 2, Apiromvilaichai 2, Chaiwat 1, Limsuwan 0, Kongkum 0,   Quarter scores: 23-18, 43-33, 68-60, 86-78
