PBA: League tweaks Governors' Cup format, eliminates semifinal round robin

The PBA announced Saturday that it is tweaking the post-season format of the Governors' Cup, the last of three conferences per season, by putting in instead a similar structure as the All-Filipino and Commissioner's Cup.

"Based on our studies, the third conference playoffs proved to be the weakest since there are no match-ups unlike in the first and second conferences," said PBA commissioner Chito Salud.

"We are going to address that by putting into place an additional phase during the third conference, featuring more playoffs."

The change, which was approved by the PBA Board of Governors, now sees the bottom two teams in the standings after the first round of play eliminated.

After that, "The top four will have a twice-to-beat advantage each in the quarterfinals and the four winners will then engage in best-of-five semifinals duels. The finalists then vie for the title in a best-of-seven series," said PBA operations chief Rickie Santos.

The conference will still keep the 6'5" height limit on imports.

In the most recent Governors' Cup, which the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters won, the top six teams after the elimination round went on to a play a single round robin against each other, with records carrying over. After every team has played, the two squads with the best records move on to the Finals. - AMD, GMA News
